ahead Rallye Monte-Carlo 2022

Waited so long: WRC Rallye Monte-Carlo 2022 opens season on Thursday

Time has dragged on for so long! But here comes the real celebration of rally fans from all over the world. And the reason is the most unpredictable rally of the FIA WRC! Rallye Monte-Carlo 2022 grabs the best areas to offer our updated drivers and their brand new Rally1 cars the toughest challenge!

Rallye de Monte Carlo
Monaco, French Alps

Tricky roads on the route of Rallye Monte-Carlo 2022

17 special stages totaling 296.03 km, that’s the main plan for the weekend in Monaco for 20 – 23 January! These exciting cornering stages pose the tricky puzzles for our WRC driver line-up 2022. Relatively easy asphalt roads are complicated by the winter weather, which focuses on thoughtful tire choices. Who will be the smartest, because the ability to drive slowly as fast as possible is the key to success in the Rallye de Monte Carlo 2022.

The famous routes Luceram / Lantosque 15.20km and La Bollène-Vésubie / Moulinet 23.25km will be hidden in darkness! They add up to 38.45km before drivers descend the mountains along the picturesque port of the Principality. After the start on Thursday evening at the renovated Monaco Casino Square, an opening night awaits around the atmospheric Col de Turini in the mountains of the Alpes Maritimes.

The Col de Fontbelle is the truly mythical one, always covered with snow and ice. A 4km stretch on both sides of the pass can be so treacherous that cars are reduced to walking speed. For our party, rally fans have the great opportunity to be inspired by the all views of the French Alps and the Principality while the drivers do their job.

Time to shift up the gears of the new Rally1 cars!

In addition to the tricky, nervous and very beautiful route of the Rally de Monte Carlo 2022, some of our brave drivers have already had problems. That’s the additional headaches. New hybrid cars do not suit everyone as they should. Thierry Neuville, Craig Breen, Elfyn Evans, these professionals have the crashes when testing new hybrid cars. That’s the point! Logically, the Rallye Monte Carlo is not a good idea to start the FIA World Rally Championship in this way. It’s too dangerous a challenge, especially because the cars are very new that we didn’t use for the race.

As if all this were not enough for the organizers of the WRC Monaco Rally and they set another trap for our courageous drivers! On Friday there is no service from morning until night. Drivers only have to make do with a tire change in Puget-Théniers.

However, if you don’t risk anything, you don’t win anything! As far as rally fans are concerned, we will finally see the new cars and hear the sounds of the brand new hybrids! We can definitely say that whoever will be able to drive a Rally1 car with the best time – will be one of the fastest during the WRC season.

New faces on board for the Rallye Monte Carlo 2022!

This is a real personal turmoil in the WRC, even at such an unfavorable time, but there is nothing you can do about it! Sebastien Ogier, part-time driver at Toyota Gazoo racing WRC team, changed a co-driver for the first time in 16 years. For the time being, Benjamin Villas replaces Sebastien Ogier’s co-driver Julien Ingrassia. But that’s not all: the other World Rally Champion Sebastien, but Loeb, also changed co-driver. They seem to have conspired!

After 23 years of close friendship and a series of amazing victories, the bond between Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena broke. We would like to believe that they will continue to maintain the friendship. Anyway, we are pleased to welcome Isabelle Galmiche as new co-driver Sebastien Loeb to the M-Sport Team. Modest, smiling and, it seems, she is a real hard worker! Now the nine-time World Rally Champion is ready to compete in the Monte-Carlo Rally 2022.

The Hyundai crew of Thierry Neuville and Martin Wydaegh is also ready! A year has passed since the brave Neuville co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul retired after nine years of working together. We may not be able to bring Martin Wydaegh on board as a new face, but we have other reasons to include him in our list, because there is no better place for Thierry Neuville to win than the Rally de Monte Carlo. Despite the shocked Martin Wydaeghe, they finished third with Thierry at the WRC Monaco 2021. Now the Hyundai crew is simply forced to take the desired first place!

Stop talking, it’s time to switch to Monaco time zone!

For someone like Jari-Matti Latvala, Rallye de Monte Carlo is a success. As a driver, he gave up his dream of a racing career to lead the Toyota Gazoo racing. Who could have imagined that Toyota drivers Sebastien Ogier and Elfyn Evans would be on the podium in Monaco, while Kalle Rovanpera was fourth!

For someone, old demons arise when he hears the word “WRC Monaco.” Ever since Ott Tanak joined Hyundai, the Monte-Carlo Rally has been a series of failures for him. The Estonian rally driver scared us with a crash of the Hyundai i20 at full speed in the Rally de Monte Carlo 2020. 2021 Ott Tanak led, but could not keep up with Ogier and Evans and retired.

But as you can see, the challenge of WRC Monaco cannot leave anyone indifferent. Now is the time to let go of the old demons and to be inspired to rise to this challenge with dignity! Full coverage of the Rallye Monte Carlo 2022, including stage reports, interviews and expert analysis, will be available on WRC + All Live.
