F1 Baku 2021 is both strange and amazing! The unusual race, it is not what we get used to in Formula 1. The Grand Prix of Azerbaijan consists of two completely different races, from the almost boring start to the most exciting last second. This kind of Formula 1 challenge should be in your collection and here are 5 reasons why.
#1 Lewis Hamilton could not overtake Max Verstappen at F1 Baku City Circuit.
The battle between Red Bull and Mercedes F1 has come to a head, the qualifying results in Baku were inspired by the atmosphere in Monaco. Charles Leclerc took pole – hurrah, this time accident-free. Lewis Hamilton is second and says he is very happy with it on Saturday. Max Verstappen’s best result could be far ahead of Charles Leclerc, but that was not the case because of the red flags, which is doubly offensive!
Red Bull gives you ‘flexible’ wings
Verstappen leads the F1 drivers’ standings after the Monaco Grand Prix. That’s why Lewis Hamilton is nervous in his car on the track. But not only that: on the eve of the race weekend there is a serious scandal – the question of the” flexible wing”of Red Bull is not giving the Mercedes team peace of mind. But whether it is so flexible – the debate about it has not subsided to this day.
Coming back to our uncharacteristic race. Baku City Circuit is a very difficult race track. As much as Lewis Hamilton has tried, he could only get a little closer to Sergio Perez, but it was not enough. You will interesting to know, Mercedes F1 car still has the speed advantage on the straights, which rules out questions about Red Bull’s “flexy wings.” At the same time, Red Bull F1 cars have speed advantages in turns – that’s the crux of the matter!
#2 Sebastian Vettel on the podium!
How long have we all been waiting for this and how much has Sebastian Vettel heard before it happened? It seemed as if all the most unpleasant things F1 driver can hear – Vettel did. Someone says he has lost his form and it is time for him to leave. Someone predicts that he will now be number two in the Aston Martin. In short, many journalists and authorities have written off the German, but not the loyal fans who believed in Sebastian Vettel to the end.
Aston Martin F1 Team on the podium for the first time
German started in eleventh place, but finished a superb second as he pitted 18 laps later than everyone else. At the restart after Stroll’s crash,Sebastian Vettel relegated Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly to fourth place and climbed onto the podium. With what magic he managed to avoid trouble and accidents in F1 Baku City Circuit – you only know it when you watch the race. This Sunday he stood up like a phoenix and smiled at everyone from his deserved second place. This is the first podium in the history of the Aston Martin F1 Team.
#3 Sergio Perez in front of Max Verstappen.
Sergio Perez failed in qualifying on Saturday due to red flags. F1 fans were just as stunning as at the end of Sunday’s F1 Baku race. All eyes were on pole-sitter Charles Leclerc when the lights went out. Scuderia Ferrari driver started this race and pulled away with Hamilton, Verstappen and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, but Leclerc dropped back to P4 a lap later and Perez overtook the Ferrari.
Christian Horner said – Sergio Perez did.
Sergio needs the best results. His position in the team is as unstable as a chair on three legs. Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Daniil Kvyat can tell him about it. Christian Horener, Red Bull team principal, is a man of great understanding and little patience. He is sure Mexican f1 driver needs for six races at least to get used to the car. Serigo Perez meanwhile gets the quiet hints that the team needs two cars to beat Mercedes. Perez not only pretends to listen, but also works according to the Red Bull team policy, as the race in Azerbaijan shows.
#4 Pirelli’s Poltergeist or Baku F1 twice races.
Max Verstappen took the lead after a crucial sequence of pit stops. Lewis Hamilton started this sequence on lap 12 with a slow switch for Hards due to the traffic in the pit lane, Verstappen pitted a lap later and prevailed first, followed by Perez who sped away from his championship rivals. The Dutchman seemed to have the win in his bag, everything was possible! Only if no strange poltergeist happened during the race. Lance Stroll suffered a terrible accident on lap 35, the Aston Martin driver’s left rear tire appeared to give way on the pit straight. It is clear that something is wrong.
Safety Car restarts the race. Max Verstappen leads comfortably on lap 47, takes over the Pirelli poltergeist himself due to obvious tire problems. Baku F1 leader spins and crashes behind. Uninjured but shaken, Max Verstappen waits for Bert Mailander, who arrives as quickly as possible. Safety Car stops the race on lap 48.
Race number two of the Baku Grand Prix
The race would have continued quickly if Christian Horner had not informed Michael Masi that the problem was clearly not in the tires, but on the track. What should Mr Masi do? To cheer, and he checks after 35 miles. All teams change the tires during the stop. On lap 50 we continued with a stationary start, with two laps full throttle. Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton are already looking at each other, while Red Bull have a new hope for this race in the Mexican’s face.
#5 Lewis Hamilton is out of the track.
What could have happened more dramatically with two laps to go? But Lewis Hamilton somehow senses the predictions. Before the restart F1 Baku race he told the team that no risk was necessary on the radio. Unfortunately, he did what he said a minute ago. On the penultimate lap, he had the nose ahead of Perez, but the Briton blocked himself heavily and entered the runoff of turn 1. He finished 15th, leaving Perez in the lead, Vettel in second and Gasly – after fending off a charge of Leclerc in the closing laps – on the final podium.
Toto Wolff said after the race that there is no man in the world who has never made a mistake.
What about the poltergeist at the Baku City Circuit?
As Max Verstappeb said, the problem clearly lies in the Pirelli kits. Frankly, this version is the most likely given the repetitions and the metrics and quotes of the teams. There is still investigating the situation, while Mario Isola is almost certain that the reason for the dramatic finish is debris and foreign objects.
“It’s a bit early to understand what happened to the tyres. We are waiting for the tyres back to the fitting area to analyse them, but we probably need to air freight them to Milan for a complete analysis.
“First investigations suggest debris because the rear-left is not the most stressed tyre on this circuit. It’s the rear-right; if we talk about wear it’s the front-right.
“So it’s in a position that doesn’t suggest anything special on tyres.
“The other point is that we found another cut on a rear-left tyre from another car that luckily didn’t cut the construction. It was a rear-left from Lewis, that was clearly a cut from debris. – Pirelli boss Mario Isola to SkySport Germany
So Baku GP will be part of the golden collection of the 2021 Formula One season. Every racing fan will watch the race in Azerbaijan again after a while. Another race that did not go as planned, unpredictable and full of drive from almost boring to maximum risk until the last second at full speed. That’s what Formula 1 is all about.
